WEEKEND TOP STORIES

-------------------------------------

------------------

SATURDAY

------------------

ELECTION-2024-RANKED-CHOICE-VOTING -- Election reform advocates had hoped for a big year at the ballot box. That's because an historic number of states were considering initiatives for ranked choice voting or to end partisan primaries. Instead, voters dealt them big losses in the November elections. Voters in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, Oregon and South Dakota all rejected proposed changes to their elections. In Alaska, a proposal to repeal ranked choice voting appears to narrowly fallen short. UPCOMING: 990 words, photos by 12:30 a.m.

ELECTION-2024-MONTANA-SENATE -- Democrats' crushing loss in Montana's nationally important U.S. Senate race settled a fierce political debate over whether a surge of newcomers over the past decade favored Republicans. It also addressed the question of whether one of the new arrivals could even take high office. Voters answered with an emphatic "yes" to both. One party now rules Montana for the first time since mining barons known as the Copper Kings had a corrupt chokehold on the state's politics more than a century ago. UPCOMING: 1,200 words, photos by 2 a.m.

MED-OBESITY-DRUG-NONRESPONDERS -- Most people taking popular drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy to lose weight have shed significant pounds. But obesity experts say that roughly 20% of patients -- as many as 1 in 5 -- may not see robust results with the new medications. The response to the drugs varies from person to person and can depend on genetics, hormones and differences in how the brain regulates energy. UPCOMING: 680 words, photo, video by 9 a.m.

REL-PERU-INDIGENOUS-CRAFTSWOMEN -- Sadith Silvano's crafts are born from ancient songs. Brush in hand, eyes on the cloth, the Peruvian woman paints as she sings. Through her voice, her ancestors speak. "When we paint, we listen to the inspiration that comes from the music and connect to nature, to our elders," Silvano said from her workshop in Lima, where she moved two decades ago from a Shipibo-Konibo Indigenous community in the Amazon. UPCOMING: 1,050 words, photos by 8 a.m.

SUNDAY

-----------------

TRUMP-DEBT -- Donald Trump will inherit a debt problem when he takes office, without a clear remedy, based on his stated economic agenda. UPCOMING: 900 words, photos by 10 a.m.

AP-ELECTION-2024-VOTECAST-BLACK-WOMEN -- After Donald Trump was declared the winner of the presidential race, many Black women who have been politically engaged said they are pulling back after carrying an outsized share of the work to get out the vote and support the candidacy of Vice President Kamala Harris. AP VoteCast, a 2024 survey of registered voters, found about 6 in 10 Black women said the future of democracy in the U.S. was the single most important factor for their vote, which was higher than other demographic groups. But now, some Black women are renewing previous calls for resting, focusing on mental health, and rethinking their enthusiasm for electoral politics. UPCOMING: 1,200 words, photos by 10 a.m.

SCI-MINI-MOON -- Planet Earth is about to part company with a space rock that's been tagging along as a mini moon for the past two months. UPCOMING: 400 words, photos by 9 a.m.

URUGUAY-ELECTION -- Uruguay goes to a runoff between two moderates. The race is expected to be tight but the stakes are low in this prosperous South American nation where front-runners broadly share a consensus on continuing the business-friendly policies of current President Luis Lacalle Pou and ramping up efforts to tackle crime. UPCOMING: 700 words, photos by 7 a.m.

ARGENTINA-RURAL-DOCTOR-PHOTO-ESSAY -- A rural doctor travels miles of unforgiving terrain by donkey, enduring cold, rain, wind and exhaustion, to visit several dozen families scattered across the highest mountain in the north of Argentina. UPCOMING: 450 words, photos.

MONDAY

------------------

HOLIDAYS-AND-POLITICS -- There's no place like home for the holidays. And that may not necessarily be a good thing. In the wake of the presidential election, the upcoming marking of Thanksgiving and the ramp-up of the holiday season could be a boon for some - a respite from the events of the larger world in the gathering of family and loved ones, hours and even days spent with people who have played the largest roles in our lives, another chapter in a lifetime of memories. UPCOMING: 740 words, photos by 2 p.m.

THANKSGIVING-TRAVEL -- A roundup of what Americans can expect to find at airports and on highways during the extended holiday travel period. UPCOMING: 700 words, photos by 2 p.m.

MED-BE-WELL-HOLIDAY-FOOD-SAFETY -- Safely serving a holiday feast takes planning and know-how, food safety experts said. Outbreaks of some types of food poisoning tend to rise in November and December. Tainted turkey, undercooked stuffing and germ-lace gravy from holiday buffets have all led to past illnesses and even deaths, according to federal investigations. Prepare the turkey properly, roast it thoroughly and check for doneness with a food thermometer. Keep side dishes and leftovers out of the critical "danger zone" of temperatures that allow bacteria to grow. UPCOMING: 700 words, photo by 9 a.m.

ELECTION-2024-TRUMP-FAMILY-ABORTION -- For one conservative and Catholic family in Ohio, their answer to combating abortion is to adopt and foster children and raise them to believe in the sanctity of life. That includes teaching their children which candidates are aligned with their beliefs. Mike and Erin Young believe activism begins at home. They adopted three children when they were babies. One is a survivor of an attempted abortion. The day before this year's election they gathered around a fire at home to pray for former President Donald Trump. Now the family says they need to pray about how state's decide the issue. UPCOMING: 1,200 words, photos by 12:30 a.m.
